Cupping FAQs

Cupping FAQs

Among the various natural healing methods used in chiropractic care is cupping therapy. Though it’s certainly not a new one, it’s been making waves recently. Our team at Convergent Therapies offers answers to some of the most common questions about cupping below.

.

What exactly is cupping and how does it work?

Cupping is a form of therapy in which cups are placed on areas of the body that might be causing your pain or medical condition. The cups are heated, which leads to a vacuum-like effect. This heat pulls the skin, which causes blood to flow to the area while promoting lymphatic flow.

What conditions does it help with?

Cupping can help with a variety of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Muscle strains
  • Pain in the neck, shoulders, back, and legs
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis
  • Fatigue
  • Sports injuries
  • Auto accident injuries
  • Work Injuries
  • Asthma
  • Cold and flu
  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Headaches and migraines

It has even helped with cases of anemia and high blood pressure.

Is it safe?

Cupping is generally safe. However, like any other treatment or technique, it can depend specifically on who performs the treatment and your overall health. You must go to a trained specialist, such as our chiropractor. And when you come in to see us, we’ll assess your health and conditions to ensure that cupping is a good choice for you. If we determine for any reason that it isn’t, we’ll be happy to provide other treatment options to address your issues and achieve optimal health.

Does cupping hurt?

Cupping therapy does not generally hurt. However, it does help address deeper layers of muscle and tissue. If you’ve ever had a deep tissue massage, you might have felt some slight discomfort as those deep layers were treated. You can expect something similar from cupping, but keep in mind that addressing those deep layers is one reason such therapies are so effective at relieving chronic pain and tension. If you find the treatment painful in any way, you must let your chiropractor know during treatment.

Will it leave marks?

The most common side effect of cupping is bruising at the sites where the cups are placed. This is due to a few things going on: the skin being pulled, the blood flowing to the area, and any capillaries that break. However, all of this heals and is natural. The bruising typically disappears within a week or less, though it might sometimes take a little longer.
